Find the best Whitley Bay walks. The Ramblers Association now have a greatly improved website which is an exceptional resource for all walkers, hikers and young families wanting to go for walks with young children. This site lists everything from historical walks to leader led walks to any really arduous walks within the Monkseaton area.

Find A Walk Near Me by using Walking Britain is a truly excellent and free resource. Just enter where you are or where you would like to walk - and print out directions. The walks are graded and you can buy a specific map of the area at the same time. These are proper OS maps and weather proofed if required.

I always think of walking as one of the few activities you can do for free - and now you can with this guide!

Walking, Hiking and Outdoor Shops

Great Outdoors Superstore

Boundary Mill Retail Park, Park Ln, Shiremoor, Newcastle upon Tyne NE27 0TN, UK – 0330 041 5448

Visit this store regularly. Constantly disappointed by the high prices. Deffinatly don't trust the signs, just because it says 'Sale'' doesn't mean it is cheaper than other stores.

Good range of outdoor activity clothing, footwear and general items, including camping equipment at reasonable prices.

walkoutdoors.com

49 Ilfracombe Gardens, Whitley Bay NE26 3LZ, UK – 0191 251 4388

I first went to Walkoutdoors because they had good reviews and offered boots I wanted at a great price, having now dealt with them can see why they get such reviews, great to deal with an outfit that know their stuff and give great advice / service - delighted with new boots which arrived next day

Great personal and local service

TOG 24 Newcastle

Newcastle, Tog 24 Boundary Mills Stores, Shiremoor, Newcastle upon Tyne NE27 0BS, UK – 0191 297 2420

Great shop

WalkingWorld.jpg
Another good walking guide. Walkingworld has huge library of guides with a good selection of walks, of varying lengths and grades, pretty well anywhere in the UK. The walks come in an excellent format making them very easy to follow, with photographs to illustrate every important decision point and a proper Ordnance Survey map.

A modist annual subscription gives you unlimited access to all the walks. However you can Pay As Go by downloading indiviual walks. You get one walk free.

Crucially you can also find walks France, Spain, Norway, Portugal and Australia!

Camping and Caravaning

Old Hartley Caravan and Motorhome Club Site

Old Hartley Club Site, Whitley Bay, Seaton Sluice, Tyne & Wear NE26 4RL, UK – 0191 237 0256

It is a well run site and kept very clean. My only faults would be: a. Who would put a caravan park on the side of a hill and b. The only source of fresh water is an uphill hike from some of the pitches. What comes down clean must go back up when dirty.

One of my favourite sites. Brilliant location for the beaches. The pub, Delaval Arms, up from the site is friendly and serves good food. If you have dogs like us it's a great site.

Whitley Bay Holiday Park

The Links, Whitley Bay NE26 4RR, UK – 0330 123 4968

I loved this holiday!! My first ever holiday at Whitley Bay ever! Everything about the park was perfect, friendly and welcoming. Me and my partner really enjoyed the entertainment on the low season (Monday to thursday) before the high season started (Friday onwards). Wacky Wes and Naughty Nick made the entertainment very enjoy able and made you very welcome! You made up my entire holiday! Don't ever change what you do, we loved having the banter and the laughs with you guys! Loved everything about you guys We will definitely be coming back here again, for another perfect holiday!!

Arrived back from a 3 day break, the park & caravan was lovely, very clean & tidy. The staff on site was great, really friendly. Whitley Bay was lovely, although not much to do if staying longer than the 3 days. We was surprised how inexpensive it was, we didn't find food/drinks too over priced. Would recommend trip to the lighthouse whilst there.

This saves worrying and going through all the small print. However you you may need to check with the owner where the dog is expected to sleep and the what size of dog you can have!
Dog People find this is such a great website. If you have dogs who go on holiday with you just enter NE26 3AZ and everything from dog friendly Bed and Breakfasts and Hotels to dog friendly walks and beaches come up. The Dog People site covers Bed & Breakfast, Holiday Parks, Hotels, Self Catering, Pubs & Food, Days Out. Enjoy!

Snake bites

Most snake bites in the UK are not serious. But it's important to get all snake bites checked as soon as possible.

Call 999 or go to A&E immediately if:

  • you think you, or someone else, has been bitten by a snake

Find your nearest A&E

Information:

If you're not in the UK when you are bitten by a snake, contact the emergency medical services in the country you're in.

Get foreign travel advice on GOV.UK

What to do while you're waiting for help

Do

  • stay calm, most snake bites in the UK are not serious and can be treated

  • keep the part of your body that was bitten as still as you can

  • lie in the recovery position if you can

  • take paracetamol for any pain

  • try to remember the colour and pattern of the snake to tell the doctor

  • take off any jewellery and loosen clothes near the bite, in case it swells

Don’t

  • do not go near the snake, or try to catch or kill it

  • do not try to suck or cut the poison (venom) out of the bite

  • do not tie anything tightly round the part of the body where the bite is

  • do not take aspirin or ibuprofen, as they can make bleeding worse

What happens at the hospital

You will usually need to stay in hospital for at least 24 hours if you have been bitten by a snake.

The bite will be cleaned and bandaged. You may be given an injection to help protect you from tetanus.

If you were bitten by a poisonous (venomous) snake you will be treated with a medicine to fight the venom. This is given through a thin tube into a vein, called a drip.

Types of UK snake

Only 3 types of snake are found in the wild in the UK.

The adder is the only venomous snake, but you should get all snake bites checked as soon as possible.

Telling the doctors the colour and pattern of the snake that bit you could help them treat it.
